Hi all, just a reminder to check on the Peregrine Falcon nest. The eggs could hatch at any time A word of warning. Not every clutch results in viable offspring. There are a number of reasons that eggs do not hatch including poor incubation/exposure to weather, developmental problems related to genetics or contaminant exposure, and predation. So, cross your fingers for a successful hatch.
All the Best,

ReplyDeleteThanks for the update. I thought the eggs were to hatch last week and was getting worried. Hopefully, we will see a chick soon.

What is the normal time frame for a falcon to abandon the eggs once she realizes they're not going to hatch? They were exposed to the cool air quite a bit before the nest box was switched to this current one.
ReplyDeleteI found this on the web
ReplyDeleteSometimes there is "egg failure" which can result from a number of factors including infertility, breakage, or weather. The female may push an egg that has failed to the side of the nest box. If an entire clutch is lost, the female may attempt to re-nest several weeks later, often in a different location.
I saw 4 eggs this morning about 5:11 am... the bird was off the nest , so was easier to see them
ReplyDeleteI miss this blog site. It is far more informative regarding what is going on with the birds specifically without personal shared information within the "community". It is sometimes difficult to find out what is going on with the birds that way... I am crossing my fingers for a successful hatch.
ReplyDeleteIt is really too bad they couldn't have been given the new nest box earlier. The first egg was laid March 20th and eggs that were laid days after that have hatched already. Today is day 35, something should be happening by now. There are no pips in the eggs nor is she showing any behaviour that might indicate an imminent hatch. This is just so sad. I hope they reclutch.

ReplyDeleteAs suspected, the automatic post time is way off.
A request to all ... please take the time to add date and post time (eastern zone if possible) to all comments so we have an accurate time line. Thanks ...

Dad brought something that looked like a mouse. Mom fed the one chick some pieces and gobbled down the rest. Three other eggs in the nest.
ReplyDeleteSaw Mom eating some of the hatched egg shell earlier this morning.

Clock appears to be 3 hours slow with posting.
ReplyDeleteIt was 5:30 am EST when I posted that we had a hatch and no one else had posted yet, I was the 'woohoo' post. About 15 minutes later - so 5:45, the dad came in with food and fed the chick. He/she was still a bit wobbly but was not wet so must have hatched during the night sometime.
ReplyDeleteI should also mention that I was watching until 9:30 pm EST last night and there were 4 eggs before I logged off for the evening however she was listening to them quiet a bit. Don't know if that will help with the timelines but we know it was after 9:30 and before 5:30! Question is was it before or after midnight :)
ReplyDeletethe finch web cam is down again.. i just watched the falcon chick get a good feeding from i think the dad....time was 10:25 to 10:32 am 5/1/09

ReplyDeleteAs I mentioned yesterday, the blog site is so much more informative as long as it is updated and people are just recording observations. Wing and Patrick are busy and it takes a lot to keep up.
YAY and HOORAY for the Peregrine parents and their hard work!! Thanks for the updates everyone.
